New Movies Empty New Movies

Is it me or are all movies coming out today horrible/bad and decent at best? There is like no good movies out recently. All the new super hero movies are mad bad, same with horror movies/action movies and even the new SW movies are terrible compared to the older ones. Does anyone else feel this way?

New Movies Empty Re: New Movies

Yeah movies just aren't what they used to be. Back in the day there was a real emphasis on THE STORY and something called character development. Seems like that has taken a backseat over the past decade and a half. What is even worse is some of the movies that people consider to be "Visionary, great even!" like Inception that in reality just confuse the fuck out of everyone and makes it look like the director was mixing acid with pot. People act like it's good just because of twists and turns and other bullshit rather than actually focusing on the meat of the story, the context, and the characters themselves.

Part of the problem is to that various parties in the industry (ie. the people with the money) have a very heavy say about what goes into movies they produce. This often means that in order to sell a few Seazoos or whatever Directors and Screenwriters are forced to make a movie that fits some elementary idea of a general audience rather than make the movie that they want to make (though supposedly this is "what foreign markets love!")

By stark contrast tv seems to be getting better, possibly due to the competition it faces from net services like NetFlix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. Subscription base services have much less incentive to model their show after what corporate sponsors expect to target a general audience. Hell, there is even less of an incentive to meet what a "general audience" wants since the worst result that could happen is losing a few people's monthly fees. Such a situation invites creative freedom.

Totally agreed. Almost all big name movies today are remakes, sequels, and adaptations, with few original properties. I love horror and scifi, but the offerings are weak there. Horror movies today rely too much on pop-scares and scifi movies rely too much on special effects. Neither is an effective substitute for fundamentally sound storytelling.
